The Freebird 50 catamaran design was developed from that of the smaller Firebird design by Modular Moldings, a blisteringly fast 25 foot open deck racing catamaran that twice won the Cowes Round the Island Race. The length and beam were doubled and a deck house added to create a strong, spacious cruising catamaran capable of taking its crew anywhere in the world. Both boats were designed by Toby Richardson, a hugely experienced catamaran sailor and the stress calculations were handled by a former senior member of the British Aerospace engineering team which created the Concorde airliner.
