This unique ski boat has virtually all brand new operating systems with less than ten hours of time. That includes all the major mechanical parts engine new 5.7 GM Vortec , headers and risers IMCO , mufflers Hardin Marine , intake manifold Holley , and Procharger intercooler the M1SC Procharger was not impacted by the salt problems that led to the failure of the original engine and the electronics including Holley Throttle body, self learning programmable ECU, interconnection cables, relays and all operating electronics and the conversion to a self contained cooling system Monitor Marine for the block. Now, my prized boat needs a new home. The following article quot Getting a Leg Up quot was published in Powerboat Magazine in April 1997 and is a test evaluations of the same boat as Tricky, except it was running a 465 naturally aspirated Mercury big block engine as pre-owned in competition. This is about Martie Wells, his background, and his experience building 1 of the fastest and safest ski racers ever, using the best technology available. It clearly shows the reasons why I initially bought the boat and is relevant for anyone who is interested in buying the boat for either its capability or safety. The following are direct quotes When designing his boat, Wells called on his experience to come up with a hull he felt had never been built before. In a nutshell, the WellsCraft V trap bottom is a 22 degree stepped V with 3 wide strakes per side and radically reversed chines that create sponsons. quot I wanted to bring sponsons down because the pad V bottoms were so unstable at high speeds, quot said Wells. quot I wanted something any 1 could jump in and drive. quot By almost combining the best of V bottom and tunnel design, Wells produced a hull not unlike a Mod VP design. The tunnels created between the two quot wide sponsons captured air and provided lift for speed, yet the boat turned amazingly well. Our chief test driver Bob Teague called the boat 1 the best applications he s driven with a Blackhawk. Fortunately, conditions for our test were not characteristic for Parker, Ariz., with high winds creating a good size chop. We hit a few two holes with the ballast tank full at 65 or 70 mph, and the 21SR ate them up. Turning stock 31 quot pitch Blackhawk propellers through 1.5 1 gears in the twin propeller drive, our test engine propelled the boat to 95.l mph on radar. The boat cruised at 36 mph at only 2500 and picked things up in a hurry, hitting 43 at 3000, 53 at 3500, 62 at 4000, 76 at 4500 and 85 at 5000. Equally impressive was Wells choice of gelcoaters. He went to 1 of the best in the country, Rod Rothrock, who does much of the gelcoating for Eliminator Boats. The graphics gave the boat the appropriate attitude for its capabilities and were expertly applied. Behind the gelcoat, the lamination schedule consisted of vinylester resin and 1708 and 1808 Knytex biaxial fiberglass. A balsa core stiffened the deck, while the flooring and bulkheads were Baltek s Decolite panels, which is balsa coring with 1208 directional glass on each side. Primary structural support was provided by 4 full length spruce stringers. When it came to installing the important hardware, a MerCruiser cradle thru bolted to stringer mounted L angles and the stan dard transom assembly held the engine in place. A sea strainer fed by a water pickup kept engine cooling water clean. The foregoing is just a summary of the important facts about this boat that were covered in the article. I m selling this unique ski boat because it just doesn t belong here in Maui. The waters are way to rough and the winds too strong most of the year. I ve been told my primary launch harbor is the 2nd windiest harbor in the world. I was not aware of these conditions when I brought her here. After bringing the boat here, I suffered a major engine failure due to the salt water attacking the original aluminum heads. A complete conversion was necessary. During my break in period I have seen 52 mph at 4000 rpm running the 31 in props on the Blackhawk drive with full nose down trim and 300lbs of water ballast in the nose to smooth out the ride, so I am quite confident that she will run in the upper 70 s at 5300 rpm, given relatively smooth water conditions as the motor puts out about 475hp which is similar to the test boat in the article. This is a boat for someone who wants speed and safety and would like to be able to idle along at five mph dragging 4 fishing lines, as well as pulling skiers in open water on long boards, or just cruising the rivers and lakes. And to get there, this boat comes with a new aluminum trailer custom built for use in salt water.
