Each of them was preserved by Snake Mountain Boatworks LLC using a research-driven process that is informed by the reality that, since an old boat can be old only once, its preservation means never replacing a single scrap of wood, an engine, upholstery, gauges, etc. that can be saved. Each boat in our collection meets the ACBS “preserved” test: at least ninety-five percent of its hull is comprised of original wood. It is powered by iit s original engine. Its finishes match those on it the day it rolled out of its factory, or, in the case of the Century we are offering today, it retains its original factory finishes, upholstery, and more.Unfortunately, time is unrelenting, and, as my wife and I enter our eighties, we must face reality that it is time to begin offering these very special woodies to their next stewards.Soit begins……………With hull number “P56278” is still stamped on her transom, our 1956 “Cowhide” Century Palomino that rides on her balloon-fender Tee Nee trailer, VIN 75090,is as original a boat as I have ever seen. Not only did we not replace a single scrap of wood, she retains all her original factory finishes above the waterline, her original cowhide upholstery, complete with original labels reading Fortier Upholstery Co., Manistee, MI. Rather than strip and refinish, and lose that originality, we lightly hand sanded the hull. We applied three coats of Pettit Captain’s Ultra Clear varnish to the decks and transom, and three coats of black Interlux Brightside Topside Paint to the topsides and covering boards.· UPHOLSTERY &CEILINGS: The cowhide upholstery and ceilings, both of which are factory-original, were cleaned with vinyl cleaner. All six cushions retain their Fortier Upholstery Company labels.· BOTTOM: We did strip the bottom to bare wood and apply four coats of Smith’s CPES. Five coats of Interlux 2000E Barrier Coat Primer were followed by three coats of Pettit Hard Racing Copper Bronze bottom paint.· OUTBOARD ENGINE: Her1957 30 HP Johnson Javelin outboard retains its original paint. Yes, it is a1957, S/N 1398838, which was explained to me by her original owners, “Dad bought this boat from Glenny’s Marine in Lunenburg, MA towards the end of 1956along with the 1957 Javelin. According to him, Johnson had stopped making1956’s by then.”The engine, which runs like a watch, was restored mechanically by Fran Secor, Otego, NY. He cleaned, but otherwise did not touch any of the original paint on the inside or outside of the engine.· HARDWARE: The hardware, windshield, stainless trim strips, Century hull tags and windshield, are all original, and were fully restored by D&S Custom Metal Restoration, Holyoke, MA.· TRAILER: The original-to-the-Cowhide Tee Nee trailer has been completely disassembled, sand blasted, re-painted and reassembled.
