The design (Number 1904) was completed in 1967 and went into production in 1968. A success from the beginning, in the Southern Ocean Racing Circuit’s 1968 race, a T34C won her class. Her design has gone on to win numerous offshore races, including the Port Huron-Mackinac and the Marblehead-Halifax races, among many others. At least one circumnavigation and many Atlantic and Pacific passages are part of the heritage. During its ten-year production run, 525 boats had been launched, making it one of Tartan Marine’s best-selling models ever. Later, an unrelated S&S design was introduced in 1984 and marketed as the Tartan 34 MKII; an additional 110 of these boats were built. Most of these are still accounted for and there is a very strong 34C Owner’s Association, a testament to the quality of these beautiful classics. A common expression of “Let Olin steer” is used amongst many owners, the balance is so good. One owner comments that the boat steers better to windward without him on board.
