As a basic policy, you need to bring sufficient fenders to safely keep one side of the watercraft off a dock or wall. While some smaller boats can get away with 2 fenders, an excellent minimum would be 3 fenders. If leaving the boat for more than a day at dock, use 3 or even more; if one fender goes flat or is lost while the watercraft is unattended, the watercraft will scrub the dock or wall. Carry extra fenders to accommodate both sides of the boat if rafting is usual. Tie your fenders to something solid like a cleat or stanchion; there can be a great deal of pressure applied to the fender line as the boat pinches the fender against the dock. Keep the mounting place of the fenders as low as possible on the watercraft to avoid the fender from swinging up out of the method, where it not protects the hull from the dock. The fender must be hung just off the water (to avoid marine growth on the fender) and low enough so that it can't be pressed out from between the watercraft and the dock. Position your fenders vertically or horizontally to provide the best quantity of surface area contact. Avoid high point load situations where the fender can be pressed almost flat. Fenders can also be hung from the dock to help secure the watercraft.
